What Have I Learnt?

Some lists about 'what I have learnt'

Within 'professional':

  • blogging - blog little and often, but not only within my university blog but I have recently understood the importance of an online presence and have made my instagram page much more focussed on my praactice - next I want to do the same to a tumblr page
  • conforming - I remember Matt telling me about his time at university and I defnitely can resonate with him - but I really don't want to make work that is pointless and twee and just there to be pretty
  • however to counteract this - I need to understand that work like that is around for a reason - I must at least appreciate other forms of work. Who knows - the work I thought I would hate may feed into my own practice and make it better
  •  find inspiration from anything - even if that is something like an episode of Jeremy Kyle - you can take the piss
  • always be reflective and self critical - I feel like I am currently doing that, always asking why?? What is the point in this? I don't mind making shit work, at first I was worried about it, especially on a visual level, but now, I know the importance of making mistakes

PROFESSIONAL

Within 'personal':

  • learnt how to pull a pint - within work - learning new skills just in general - its important to keep the things your doing outside of university fresh, I was working in a pet shop before this
  • there's a lot of things to do with health and maintaining good health here - like I have given up smoking, walk more, don't drink every time I go out - I think this feeds into a success in managing money too, definitely - which then has an affect on university life
  • spending time by myself - like before I came to Leeds I had a real safe net of 'friends' but now that is pretty much gone I've had to deal with being able to be by myself - and its been great, if anything I think I prefer it - I can enjoy my own company

PERSONAL
I think this task is to help us understand the difference between the two parts of this module - personal and professional - but how one affects the other and the importance of maintaining both to become a successful practitioner. I think I find dealing with personal the hardest because sometimes its difficult to relate a point such as 'give up smoking' with 'be reflective and self-critical' - but they definitely interlink.
