End of Module Evaluation - OUIL 403

1.     Which practical skills and methodologies have you developed within this module and how effectively do you think you are employing them within your own practice?

Within the briefs I have tried a few different practical processes in making images. Firstly I went straight into simply drawing with pen, which is actually quite an alien process to me in producing   something that is final. This was enjoyable, however, but I think there was a lot of practice that could have been employed beforehand, I will definitely take this further, as alongside, ‘Visual Language’ will help me in practicing. I incorporated collage and paper-cutting in the latter two briefs, where by the end, the methodologies definitely got more complex – as I started to investigate into how to change up the style of collage by putting the pieces through photocopying processes etc.

2.     Which principles/ theories of image making have you found most valuable during this module and how effectively do you think you are employing these within your own practice?

Creating scamps and roughs is a whole new principle introduced to me. Although I feel as though I must develop their effectiveness to me learning in how I use them through practice, they have definitely helped me collate numerous ideas in a somewhat systematic way. Working within frames too has been a huge help in articulating ideas visually, especially when working to a brief’s requirements. By the end of the briefs I think I have also grasped the concept of creating pieces to working as a set and forming a narrative of sorts – something that I have really enjoyed investigating, I will definitely be taking this through to future briefs.

3.     What strengths can you identify within your submission and how have you capitalised on these?

I have found it quite easy to put my ideas onto a page; I like to think through the briefs I have responded to the tasks in a somewhat unconventional and original way. As long as through the upcoming briefs I remember to reflect upon my ideas, I will continue to throw ideas out all of the time. I have enjoyed capitalising on my own opinions towards the briefs through the briefs, giving a piece my own tone of voice. As long as I don’t offend anybody ever, this is something I hope is nurtured through the time I am a student at LCA.   


4.     What areas for further development can you identify within your submission and how will you
address these in the future?

Something I know I need to battle with which is evident through the briefs is my investment of craft and labour, drawing with accuracy and so on. If I want to be successful and produce great work, I know I need to dedicate a lot of time to the crafting. I think this has become a problem, especially through this module, because I have allowed this to become a very ideas-led module. I know that I need to recognise the balance between being an artist and designer, which I will have to really battle with and consider next module if I’m going to do well. Due to this, I also must consider reflection of ideas and taking time to evaluate the direct I head in through the briefs, so that I end up with final bodies of work that have clarity and people who view the work can see that.


5.     In what way has this module introduced you to the Ba (Hons) Illustration programme?

This module has identified to me the sheer importance of time management and working to deadlines. I don’t think I have had major problems with this so far, but I can see how easy it is to fall behind. I understand how these exercises parallel with illustration in the world of work, which is a really good approach to the way the course is taught. It has also demonstrated to me the ways in which illustration can be applied, for instance, editorial pieces, posters, etc. Especially the approach to editorial pieces is something that has been intriguing and I would love to do more – it could be good practice to do this in my own time. I also understand how independent we must be in the direction of our work and I know that this will get more prominent as the course progresses.
